Mizan — About Us

Some things exist because there is demand for them. Mizan exists because there was no alternative worthy of the work.

The Collection

Somewhere between the ancient silk routes of Persia and the master weavers of Henan Province, there is a tradition of craft so demanding, so unhurried and so completely indifferent to the modern world that it has survived every disruption the centuries could throw at it. Hand-knotted Persian silk weaving at 367 knots per square inch is not a product category. It is a living art form — one that measures its progress in months rather than minutes, in individual knots rather than units, in the accumulated skill of hands that have spent entire lifetimes learning to do one thing at the highest possible level.

Mizan was founded to bring that art form to the UK market with the seriousness it deserves.

The Curation

Not every rug makes it into the Mizan collection. The vast majority do not. What we look for cannot be reduced to a specification sheet — though the specification matters enormously. 367 knots per square inch is our minimum standard, not our selling point. Pure silk is a given, not a distinguishing feature. These are the baseline. What we are actually looking for is harder to define and immediately recognisable when found.

It is the quality of stillness in an open field. The precision of a medallion that achieves perfect symmetry across millions of individual hand-tied knots. The colour story that holds together across every tone simultaneously — that works in morning light and candlelight and the flat grey of a British afternoon. The piece that stops you before you have consciously decided to stop.

When a rug does that, it enters the Mizan collection. When it does not, it does not. There is no compromise in either direction.

Every piece we carry is unique to the UK market. That is not a marketing claim — it is the foundation of what Mizan is. We do not curate what is available everywhere. We source what is rarely found elsewhere and bring it here.

The Name

Mizan — ميزان — is the Arabic word for balance.

It is the right word for this work. A hand-knotted Persian silk rug is balance made physical — the warp and weft in equal tension, every motif mirrored across every axis, the colour palette held in equilibrium across a surface built one knot at a time over months of continuous work. The great Persian weavers understood that beauty and balance are not separate qualities. They are the same quality expressed differently.

That understanding is what every piece in this collection embodies. It is what we look for. It is what we will not compromise on.

میزان. In perfect balance.

The Promise

Every rug in the Mizan collection arrives with our complete confidence in its authenticity, its quality and its singularity. Each piece is hand-knotted in pure silk. Each piece is available as a single example — one piece, one home, no restock. Each piece is accompanied by full documentation of its provenance, its materials and its craft.

We are available by WhatsApp and email for any question before, during or after your purchase. At these price points we understand that buying is not a transaction — it is a decision that deserves real human conversation. We are here for that conversation without reservation.

Mizan is based in the United Kingdom and serves the UK market exclusively. Every piece in our collection is selected, described and presented by us personally — chosen because we believe it belongs here, in a British home, in a room that deserves the finest silk weaving in the world.
