The Kashan Obsidian Palace Medallion Rug - 6x9
Black in Persian weaving is not absence. It is presence of the most absolute kind.
The Kashan Obsidian Palace Medallion commands a room before anyone has consciously decided to look at it. That near-black obsidian field — so deep it reads differently under every light source, absorbing warmth from candlelight and reflecting it back as something richer — is one of the most powerful grounds in the entire Mizan collection. Against it, ivory and champagne gold arabesque scrollwork flows across the surface with a weightlessness that should be impossible on such a dark ground. It floats. It breathes. It makes the darkness feel inhabited rather than empty.
At the heart of the piece a medallion of extraordinary restraint. Circular rather than the pointed oval forms of the Tabriz tradition, it sits in pure ivory and pale champagne at the absolute centre of the obsidian field — a moon above a midnight sea. Within it, fine arabesque scrollwork spirals from a delicate floral core outward through rings of increasing complexity, the detail building to the medallion's edge where it releases into the dark field in a cascade of ivory tendrils.
The border is ivory — the precise inversion of the field. Where the field is dark and the pattern light, the border is light and the pattern dark navy. This reversal creates a visual tension at the edge of the piece that is entirely intentional. The rug does not simply end at its border. It resolves.
Above and below the medallion, the obsidian field carries large scrolling acanthus forms in olive green and antique gold — botanical elements of considerable scale that give the piece movement and direction without disturbing its fundamental stillness.

The Kashan Obsidian Palace is a rug for rooms that already understand what they are doing. It does not suit every interior. It suits the right interior completely — dark oak floors, leather furniture, warm artificial light, rooms where considered darkness is understood as a design choice rather than an oversight. In that context the obsidian silk field does something remarkable: it makes the room feel larger by receding, drawing the eye through the pattern to the ivory medallion at the centre and holding it there.
At 6x9 it is perfectly scaled for a principal bedroom, a formal dining room or a significant sitting room where the rug is the anchor around which everything else is arranged. Interior designers working with jewel-toned or dramatic palettes will understand immediately what this piece can do to a room. Those working with more restrained schemes will find that the Kashan Obsidian adds depth and gravity that no other piece in the collection provides.
One piece. It will not be here for long.
One piece. One home. Exclusively yours.
